Alpha-Beta Optimal Leaf Assignment

The inverted exam question — assign values to leaves to MAXIMIZE pruning. Master the α/β window trick behind 2026 papers

The Simplest Explanation

Normal Alpha-Beta: given leaf values, count cuts.

Inverted (2026 papers): Given α,β window and a set of values {1,2,3,4}, choose assignment A,B,C,D to maximize leaves pruned.

Then report minimax, number of α/β cuts, which leaves pruned.

Remember This

To maximize pruning, make early children look as bad/good as needed to shrink the window quickly. The first leaf of each subtree controls whether rest gets cut.

The Setup (26T1 FN Q3)

Subtree entered with a given window; two children, each holding two leaves:

        Root (window α=2, β=4)
        / \
   Child 1 Child 2
   / \ / \
  A(?) B(?) C(?) D(?)

Values to place: {1,2,3,4} each used exactly once.

Alpha-Beta enters this subtree carrying the window (2,4).

Worked Example 1 — 26T1 FN (alpha-cuts)

Here each child of the subtree root is a MIN node holding two leaves, and the entering window is (α=2, β=4).

Goal: make each MIN child α-cut its second leaf. A MIN node α-cuts the moment its running value drops to ≤ α — i.e., its first leaf must satisfy first ≤ α = 2.

From {1,2,3,4} only 1 and 2 qualify as first leaves. Everything else gets pruned:

LeafValueRole
A1First leaf of MIN-child 1 → 1 ≤ 2 → α-cutoff, B pruned
B3never examined
C2First leaf of MIN-child 2 → 2 ≤ 2 → α-cutoff, D pruned
D4never examined

Answer: assignment 1,3,2,4 · minimax = max(1, 2) = 2 · 2 α-cuts, 0 β-cuts · pruned B,D — exactly the official key.

Worked Example 2 — 26T1 AN (beta-cuts)

Mirror image: children of the root are MAX nodes, window (α=1, β=3).

A MAX node β-cuts when its running value reaches ≥ β — so each first leaf needs first ≥ β = 3. Candidates: 3 and 4.

LeafValueRole
A3First leaf of MAX-child 1 → 3 ≥ 3 → β-cutoff, B pruned
B1never examined
C4First leaf of MAX-child 2 → 4 ≥ 3 → β-cutoff, D pruned
D2never examined

Answer: assignment 3,1,4,2 · minimax = min(3, 4) = 3 · 0 α-cuts, 2 β-cuts · pruned B,D — again the official key.

The General Recipe

  1. Identify the child type directly under the given window: MIN children → α-cuts, MAX children → β-cuts
  2. Compute how many values in the set satisfy the trigger (≤ α or ≥ β) — you need exactly one per child
  3. Place those as the first leaf of each child; dump the leftovers into the second positions (they'll be pruned)
  4. Report: minimax from the surviving first-leaves, cut counts by type, pruned = all second leaves
